Well, after a quick adjustment of the saddle, my knee seems to be better already. I did a 100km today and it feels pretty good. So, thanks Gav for the advice. I adjusted the saddle back about 10mm in the end. I’ll keep you all posted, but it seems like the odyssey can continue.
It also seems like bears can swim, ‘cos they’re on the island! I rode past one today by the side of the road with only a small gully between me and certain DEATH! Well he looked up when I rode past. Ok he looked up after I’d ridden past and honked him. Yes, even the island bears are not safe from – The Bear Honker. Fear me!
I met a nice couple from Cirencester, of all places, blatting around in a lovely vintage AC Bristol. They were on a classic car rally and I must admit for a bit I was jealous. Then I realized I was on a bicycle and they were in a beautiful sports car and I came to my senses… Next time I’m taking a car!
Parp Parp!
Love
Pete
Will you be trying a bit of logging? Any chance of a photo of you in a rather fetching (in a manly way) check shirt log rolling at speed, ideally up against a bear.
how very superduper for the couple from cirencester!
Don’t get down mate, everyone here (and in NZ) is supporting you and living their dreams through you and the fact you’ve had the balls to do something about getting out of the relentless rubbish that is slaving away to pay for a little shoe box amoungst all the other identical showboxes on each street, town or village.
Remember, you’re the Bear Honker, the only man Bears fear (or fancy-depending on beard length)
Glad the knee is better
When you do feel low, just picture yourself back making pictures for architects and how monotonous that is, trust me, everyday i get closer to buying that AK47 (with plastic spoon attachment) to ‘take out’ the office and their ‘can we just………’ !
Chin up mate, keep on pedlin!
Pete, bought Permanent Waves by Rush the other week AND a new bike at the weekend. How spooky is that? I’m now packing a Specialized Crosstrail Sport, oh yes. The ‘Sport’ bit is important as the standard Crosstrail wouldn’t be a true reflection of my prowess as an almost professional, on-off road type pedaller. Glad to hear the knee’s feeling better, I’m going to use the saddle positioning tips myself, to make me even faster.
Owen likes ‘Spirit of Radio’ almost as much as he likes my AC/DC back catalogue. He decided this all by himself, after I’d played it at him for the 10th time
Take it easy Pete, in a kind of getting of getting down South and to NZ as quickly as you can kind of way.
Steve
My next bike is going to be made of carbon and have absolutely no room for panniers. Yours looks like it’ll do the job. And after one ride if it’s rubbish, at that price you can just dump it and get a cab back. Worth thinking about.

Pete. Have you got legs like Listy’s yet? If they are, you might want to stop immediately.
I’ll see Steve’s Specialized Crosstrail Sport and raise it with an Ace Award Firestar. I’ll let you Google it to appreciate the true beauty of the latest addition to the Salter’s toy box but I think you’ll be impressed….and I suspect a little envious on occasions.
Are we there yet?
