I need to organize myself! No point in writing a blog about cycling if I haven’t done any cycling!
So it’s now the morning of day 2 and I shall now tell you what happened yesterday. That seems to make sense to me.
A beautiful day’s cycling. Flat, sunny and with magnificent views. Could you ask for more? Oh, how about a tailwind too. The cycling gods were smiling down on me. I got circled by a pair of bald eagles! I though they only occurred in National Geographic. I got to Portage lake and guessed that the cafe and gift shop might be the one that Ben and Jaya own, so I popped in and there was Ben! Jaya’s on a trip in Spain which is a shame, but maybe I’ll catch up with her if I get to Coyhaique.
So I’m now camped out the back after having a shower and loading up on some chicken salad yesterday evening. For those of you excited about bears, then bad news – none last night. Although I did put all my food and toiletries in the shower block for safety; they obviously aren’t interested in a middle aged man wrapped up in a tent. “Once you take off the wrapping, the insides are delicious”!
Once the cafe opens I’ll grab some breakfast then head off to Whittier and catch the ferry to Valdez (pronounced Valdeeez around here). I’ll probably camp there tonight, but it’ll be a short trip today if I do. But there’s not much further on for about 70 miles. So might as well tackle that with a full day.
Looks and sounds amazing mate, really does, however, does it beat sitting in an office in rainy london amending some mullions on Option 4200 B and moving a line 1 pixel to the left then back again!? errrrrrrrrrrrm, yep I think it may well do!
So, have you named the bike, what about the tent? You must do that too otherwise it’ll feel left out, FACT.
Great times ahead for you, if the start is anything to go by
Take care and keep ’em coming
Billy the Bike and Ted the Tent? I have the publishing rights for the new kids tv/book/film/musical/toys/bed linen/ and of course bike and tent range. The money pretty much prints itself.
Proud of you bro. Crossing the start line with a massive adventure ahead. they say the first 6 months is the hardest but day one sounds great.. Did you decide to buy a big gun or was there a weight issue. Keep up the reports and good to know you havnt needed to recycle your urine yet! Thinking of you everyday.
No guns, but I was in Walmart and they had a gun section. Next to the fishing tackle and kids bikes! Bonkers! When am I allowed to start drinking my own urine?
No bears eh? just bald eagles (how could you tell?).
Portage Lake looks beautiful on Google Earth. Lucky you.
Looks absolutely lovely, you’re very lucky x
Wait til you see the next lot of photos. But I know there may be trouble ahead. The hill out of Valdez goes on for about 20 miles! Mmm, cycling doesn’t get any tougher than that! xxxx
I think you may be eating those words at some point my friend!
Sounds awesome Pete, but you need to add a perfume line for your Billy the Bike and Ted the Tent range ….though on second thoughts, not sure how marketable the scent would be; somehow a “Billy the Bike” eau de parfume doesn’t conjure up the best associations…
Whisper it. “Shh, Eau de Moose. Pour toi”
